Yesterday I got the Blu-Ray for The Last Jedi and immediately proceeded to watch the fourteen deleted scenes that came with it. While they were all enjoyable four of the deleted scenes really stood out to me and I’m here to share them with you. Enjoy!
Rey Goes to “Save” The Caretakers
Thanks to The Last Jedi novel I already knew about this scene where Rey goes to save the Caretakers from “raiders” seeking to plunder the Caretakers’ village but seeing it in motion was really enjoyable. It showcased Rey in a different light than her other scenes in the movie because she was at her most, I’d say, heroic but it was also startling to witness because she was also very much enthralled with the dark side during this scene. I mean she was so angry and that anger fueled her strength during this part.
I wonder if this is a kind of precursor to a fault she might face in Episode IX. She is very protective of the people she loves or cares about and what if she was faced with a choice; turn to the dark side and save your friends or remain with the light and lose them. I have a feeling she wouldn’t hesitate to turn to the dark side if it meant the survival of her friends. Uh-oh.
Poe Gives Finn His Jacket
This, unfortunately, isn’t the full version of the deleted scene that showcases Poe giving Finn his newly sewed jacket but it’s definitely one of my favorite deleted scenes, from the book and in motion. It’s one of the few casual interactions between the Finn and Poe and it was so sweet. To think that Poe took his jacket and tried to sew it back together for Finn is one of the nicest things I’ve ever seen one character do for another character. Finn and Poe are such a great friends and I can’t wait to see more from them in Episode IX.
The Extended Fathier Scene
The fathier chase scene is one of my favorite scenes in The Last Jedi and so when I found out there was an extended! version I was so excited. And come to find out, the extended version is so much cooler. There was so much more to this scene that I was just kind of stunned into silence as I watched it.
There was also a very strange sequence during this scene where the fathiers stampeded a spa with half-naked aliens and humans and as the spa-enjoying individuals tried to escape a towel fell off of one of the aliens and he was crawling on the ground stark naked. I was like, “Ahh! Alien butt in my face!” Even though it was kind of strangely hilarious I’m glad they edited that part out of the movie. I don’t think that would’ve helped anyone’s stomach seeing that in IMAX. *shudder*
But what I loved the most from this scene was the end when Rose let the fathier go. In the extended version she has this adorable interaction with the fathier as it nibbles her hair in a sweet thank you. It was such a sweet moment that I actually got a little teary watching it. I kind of wish it was part of the final product but it unfortunately got lost in the editing room and I guess I’m okay with that. All in all, this actually happened to be my favorite deleted scene.
Finn Has A Moment With BB-8
I loved this scene because it was one of the quieter, more intimate deleted scenes as it showed Finn sitting around lost in thought about Rey. There’s some funny interaction between BB-8 and him as the astromech droid tries to get his attention but what was so surprising was that recording BB-8 possessed of when Rey said goodbye to Finn in The Force Awakens when he was in his coma. Who knew BB-8 was recording that? That’s so awesome! It’s also really sweet of him to show Finn that and it gives a more apparent depth to Finn’s friendship with Rey. I understand why this scene was cut from the final version of the film but it was definitely a deleted scene nugget.
Well, these are the deleted scenes that I happened to enjoy the most. I thank you for reading and I hope you a lovely day. May the Force be with you.
