Clothes. They can tell the story of a Star Wars character as soon as we see them. Bounty hunters have a patented look, Jedi all look somewhat similar, the agents of the Dark Side always wear black and always manage to look extraordinarily menacing, and those of royalty or wealth have their own style as well.
After a recent viewing of The Last Jedi, I realized that Rey’s wardrobe has changed accordingly to her story in these movies and clearly I had to share this discovery with you all. So, on this day after the teaser for The Rise of Skywalker, I’m here to share her evolution. Enjoy!
The Force Awakens
As you can see in this picture above Rey is sporting the now-iconic Scavenger wear; a simple beige tank top with light brown pants, the brown boots, and the sandy wraps that give the outfit its unique look.
In The Force Awakens Rey is very much considered a simple character, that is until halfway through the movie when we begin to see that she is more than just a scavenger but actually has great power with the Force. It isn’t until the end of the movie that she assumes the role as the galaxy’s potential next hope, thus changing her clothing to what she wears primarily in The Last Jedi.
The Last Jedi
In The Last Jedi, we see Rey experiencing a new chapter of her life. She’s discovering her power, she’s discovering what it means to have the responsibility of a Jedi, and she’s trying to discover where she stands between the light and the dark. Hence, grey clothing.
The grey symbolizes her sitting right in between the light and the dark, for at times she portrays great power with the light and great affinity towards the dark side. But, at the end of the movie, she chooses to follow the path of the Jedi instead of following Kylo into the darkness, hence the color of her next outfit in The Rise of Skywalker.
The Rise of Skywalker
Now she has embraced her role as a Jedi and she has the clothes to match, choosing to wear what is, essentially, the same outfit she wore in The Force Awakens except in all white (excluding the brown bracers, belt, and boots of course.)
Now there is no more questioning who her allegiance belongs to, with her dressed in full white garb and Kylo wearing his classic black attire. It seems pretty clear that she is the protagonist of the film while Kylo is the antagonist. Now, things are never set in stone until the movie is out in theaters but if Rey’s outfit is anything to go by I’m pretty sure she won’t be turning to the dark side anytime soon.
From scavenger to the galaxy’s new hope, Rey has had quite the journey which is, unfortunately, coming to an end with this film. But with whatever that end might be I’m excited to see it.
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a brilliant day. May the Force be with you, always.
