Throwback Friday: Ranking the Marvel Trailers from Worst to Best: Part 1 and 2 (Updated)

It’s one week away from Avengers: Endgame (YAY!) and to get ready for that eventful day I’m looking back at all twenty-two trailers and ranking them from worst to best. Now, at the time that I wrote this post Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame hadn’t released their trailers so, of course, I will have to update this list. Enjoy!

22. Captain America: The First Avenger

This trailer gives absolutely no justice to this film. While Captain America: The First Avenger isn’t one of the best Marvel movies ever made it is WAY better than this trailer is showing.

21. The Incredible Hulk

This may not be the worst trailer but this is definitely not the best either.

20. Thor: The Dark World

I remember seeing this trailer five years ago. It didn’t excite me then and it doesn’t excite me now. End of story.

19. Thor

Thor was definitely not my cup of tea and this trailer proves why. Yikes.

18. Iron Man

Iron Man was the first movie to start the Marvel Cinematic Universe and this trailer definitely would get people excited to see this film. Tony Stark is as arrogant as ever and the vibe of the trailer screams the rock and roll tone of the movie. It’s decent but there are better trailers ahead.

17. Iron Man 2

Whoa, this is a good trailer. It shows plenty of exciting money shots without giving the viewer an idea of what the movie is about. That’s always important. And Whiplash actually presents a legitimate threat in this trailer. I like it.

16. The Avengers

If the movie had been like this trailer it definitely would’ve ended up more like Justice League rather than the great film it ended up becoming. Now, it is exciting to see Marvel at this stage of the game because at this time these were the only heroes. To see them together was astounding. Now it’s laughable. Still, it does make me a bit nostalgic.

15. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

I remember seeing this trailer and not getting that excited about this Captain America sequel. It had some tantalizing footage but overall it seemed kind of wack. Who knew the movie would end up being so amazing?

14. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s trailer was definitely a bit iffy. The movie could be great or it could be a little boring? Thankfully the film was spectacular in ways this trailer didn’t suggest. Sometimes it’s good to have a surprise.

13. Ant-Man and the Wasp

Ant-Man and the Wasp is a great film and has easily become one of my favorite Marvel movies. It’s trailer, not so much. It has its pleasing moments but overall like Spider-Man: Homecoming this movie could’ve turned out to be really good or really bad.

12. Iron Man 3

This trailer made Iron Man 3 seem way direr than it actually was. This teaser totally made me want to see this movie. Unfortunately, the movie wouldn’t turn out to be as great as the trailer. *shrug*

11. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a disappointing sequel but this trailer is pretty good. It’s hilarious, it makes you super excited to see the Guardians again, and who doesn’t love the vibrant colors?

10. Ant-Man

This trailer is a complete misdirection from the actual tone of the film. It actually gives a vague idea of what the Ant-Man series would look like if they were serious movies. I happen to like the comedic tone a lot more but I have to say, this is a great trailer.

9. Captain America: Civil War

I remember seeing this trailer and being a tad bit horrified. Seeing these heroes that had grown to be friends fighting each other is kind of mortifying. I’m glad the movie ended up being even better than this trailer because that shows just how good it is.

8. Avengers: Age of Ultron

This trailer paints a completely different picture than what we end up actually getting from the movie. Here Ultron actually seems like a terrifying whereas in reality he’s actually quite laughable. Too bad the movie didn’t up as good as this trailer.

7. Thor: Ragnarok

This trailer is awesome. It’s funny, the music is spot on, and the different tone revived the Thor franchise in a stunning way. Taika Waititi was the perfect person to direct this movie and it’s honestly one of Marvel’s best gambles.

6. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is a GREAT movie and this trailer reminds me why. I love how it doesn’t show practically anything about the movie and yet gives us one tiny glimpse of him in the iconic Doctor Strange outfit at the very end of the trailer. Gosh, I’m getting chills just thinking about it. I love Doctor Strange!!!

5. Black Panther

I still remember the first time I saw this trailer. It made me SOOOO excited. Now that I look at it I know how much of the story it was leaving out. That’s the genius of this teaser. It gave us a lot of tantalizing money shots without conveying the plot and that’s what is most important. I love this trailer.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy

This is seriously taking me down memory lane. I remember watching this movie trailer in the movies in IMAX and (I’m covered in goosebumps just thinking about it) being absolutely wowed by what I was seeing. At the time I had no idea who these characters were and so it was super strange to see these alien superheroes. I didn’t know what the movie was going to be about but I knew I wanted to see it. Still, to this day, this is one of the best Marvel films ever created and this trailer proves that.

3. Captain Marvel

Wow, seeing this trailer just sinks in my disappointment for the actual film that much more. I’ve watched this trailer at least twenty times for all of the above reasons. The music is fantastic, the shots were perfect, and it conveyed that Captain Marvel was going to be an amazing movie. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. So sad.

2. Avengers: Endgame

This trailer is at the #2 spot for obvious reasons. I’ve seen this trailer a numerous amount of times and yet with nearly every viewing, I find myself on the verge of tears. Between the music, the emotional stakes, and the characters saying “Whatever it takes” this trailer gets to my emotions big time. I can’t wait until next Friday!

1. Avengers: Infinity War

Have you ever seen a trailer that gets better with every viewing? Well, that’s how I feel about Infinity War‘s trailer. This trailer was downright incredible when it first came out but now after seeing the actual movie, it’s even more impactful because I know the movie is actually as good as the trailer. The dire tone is legit, Thanos is legit, the end-of-the-world stakes are SUPER legit, and the awesomeness is legit. This trailer is so good it nearly brings me to tears when I watch it because I still can’t believe this film is this good.

So, those are all twenty-two movie trailers. Wow! To think that a week from now I will be watching the film that is the culmination of these films is just…baffling.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.
