Movie Review Flashback: ‘Maleficent’ Is a Gorgeous but Boring Movie

In light of the new trailer that came out yesterday for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil here’s a look back at my review for Maleficent. Enjoy!

I missed seeing Disney’s Maleficent five years ago and chose to watch the sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise, Live, Die, Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow instead. I’m glad I did. When I finally did watch Maleficent it was not what I expected, and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Angelina Jolie is the perfect actress to play the role of the anti-hero, Maleficent. She’s fierce and conniving, benevolent and caring, but she also looks the part immensely. I mean look at those cheekbones! Amazing. But she was the only good thing about the film.

Maleficent is literally the story of Sleeping Beauty but this movie changes the narrative as we get to see the fairy tale told through Maleficent’s eyes. After being betrayed by the man Maleficent thought truly loved her she cursed his daughter to fall asleep on the night before her sixteenth birthday by pricking her finger on a spindle’s wheel. ‘Star Wars’ Heroes vs. Villains: Who’s Cooler?

Star Wars has been a classic tale of good versus evil since it arrived over four decades ago in the form of A New Hope. You had the lovable heroes; Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Ben Kenobi, and the droids, C-3PO and R2-D2. And then there was the ultimate villain, Darth Vader, who emitted menace as soon as he walked in a room.

Over the years the Star Wars franchise has kept up that narrative of the heroes versus the villains in new, exciting ways. Lately, the movies have tried to blur the divisions between the protagonists and antagonists to keep viewers guessing but at the end of the day, there is still the dark side and the light. It’s fascinating stuff.

But then there’s that constant question: who’s cooler? Well, that’s what I’m here to find out. Enjoy!

Captain America: Secret War (EIGHTEEN)

The scenario, which was already a little dismal, was getting worse and worse by the second. The Winter Soldier was now fighting both Natasha and Sharon Carter at the same time. Sharon, in trying to help her friend after finding Natasha barely clinging to life as the Winter Soldier pinned her to the car roof choking to her death, jumped up to shoot him only to have him disarm her in the blink of an eye. It was enough of a distraction, however, for Natasha to kick him away. Continue reading Captain America: Secret War (EIGHTEEN)
