Tom Hardy has grown to be one of my favorite actors of all time. His nuanced performances allow him to stick out as he brings a certain depth to every character I’ve seen him play. Over the years, I have discovered that I have seen more films with him than I first imagined, making him the perfect topic for this week’s A Movie Ranking. Enjoy!
Venom is the worst movie I’ve seen Tom Hardy play in and easily my least favorite work of his. The accent doesn’t come off naturally nor does his performance as Eddie Brock. The film is also pretty bad. I will say this though, in better hands the movie would’ve been much better.
We’ll see how Venom 2 handles Eddie/Venom’s story in a more concise fashion (even though the prospect of Woody Harrelson as Carnage seems pretty cornballs.)
5. The Dark Knight Rises
Despite the fact that Tom Hardy starred in the weakest installment in The Dark Knight trilogy there’s no doubt that he was GREAT as Bane. His size, the menacing persona, Tom Hardy sold me as this powerful antagonist, both physically and mentally, that really was a thorn in Batman’s side.
Despite the fact that Tom Hardy plays a mostly mute role as the pilot, Farrier, in Dunkirk his performance was the best element of the film by a mile. It’s actually my second favorite role of his, surprisingly.
3. Mad Max: Fury Road
For a while when Mad Max was thought we immediately saw Mel Gibson’s depiction of the character and potentially heard Tina Turner’s infamous “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” song in our ears. 2015, however, would change that forever as Warner Bros. brought us a reboot of the iconic story that was truly mad.
Tom Hardy stars in it as Max and boy does he do a good job. Gruff, clearly insane, but heroic, Tom Hardy shines as the film’s protagonist alongside Charlize Theron’s no-nonsense heroine, Furiosa.
2. The Revenant
A brutal depiction of life in 19th century America, Tom Hardy stars alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as a rugged hunter named John Fitzgerald whose hatred toward Native Americans turns out to be the driving force of this dark and at times terrifying story.
It’s actually my favorite performance by Tom Hardy as he delves deep into this character and makes the viewer feel so strongly about him and yet slightly sympathize with him at the same time…until you don’t. Oh, he’s amazing in this movie.
If you’ve never seen The Revenant get your popcorn (and potentially some handkerchiefs) because this film will grip you and won’t let go until the very end. A freaking masterpiece!
Inception is one of those movies that is so good and complex that it makes you want to watch it multiple times to see if you can understand what exactly happened. Of course, Tom Hardy shines again and while he wouldn’t, of course, get any Oscar nods for his role in this particular film he is just another piece to the puzzle that makes this movie so brilliant.
So, this is how I rank all of the movies I’ve seen Tom Hardy in. He truly is one of the greatest actors of this generation and I can’t wait to see whatever his next role will be.
I thank you for reading and I hope you have a spectacular day.
