Phase 4 is fast approaching and that means new stories will have to be told. One of the fascinating trends of the first three phases was seeing villainous characters end up becoming allies of the heroes. Loki, Nebula, and Ghost are examples of this trend. What if this time around, for the next three phases, we get another exciting plot twist; the heroes becoming villains.
Wanda Maximoff started as a villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron but would become an ally of The Avengers. We saw her side with Captain America against Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War. We saw her fall in love with Vision and have to kill him just as quickly in order to save the universe from Thanos. And we saw her come back from the dead and fight Thanos in an epic one-on-one moment that left me pumping my fist in the air with joy.
But now what? Where will her story take her in the future?
In a comic made famous by its controversial storyline, Scarlet Witch turned evil after learning that her reality where she had children and had a somewhat normal life was a lie. Turns out her children were mere shards of Vision’s soul after a spell was created for them to conceive children. When she learned this horrible truth she went mad and went on a terrible rampage that would end up costing the lives of Vision, Hawkeye, and many other mutants who she nearly decimated in her untamable rage. Doctor Strange tried to stop her but he couldn’t.
She ended up going away for a while only to be found later with amnesia and engaged to Doctor Doom. (Yeah…she definitely lost it.)
Of course, things probably wouldn’t play out like this in the MCU but what if threads of this storyline were being created right now and we didn’t know it?
What if the WandaVision series can plant seeds of her eventual evolution into a fulltime villain? Wanda’s conclusion at the end of Endgame is a sad reality, for she’s lost two people that she loves in the last few years, her brother Pietro and her boyfriend, Vision. If you’ve noticed she hasn’t gotten her official superhero title yet; Scarlet Witch?
What if that becomes her new title after she starts having villainous tendencies? Like Harvey Dent was nicknamed Two-Face in The Dark Knight before he eventually adopted the title after he went mad.
Of course, as I said before, she started as an antagonist and turned good. Would she really become the bad guy again after being a hero for so long? I don’t know.
She has been confirmed to play a role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and while we immediately believed it would be a heroic team-up between the two superheroes we could instead very well see her as a villain in the Doctor Strange sequel, which would be fascinating for sure.
