The Bright Spots of the Oscars

I almost boycotted watching The Oscars because I was expecting a non-diverse evening that would leave me with a pit in my stomach. In fact, it was the exact opposite. There were plenty of exciting moments last night and today I’m here to share them all.

Brad Pitt Gets His First Oscar for Acting

Brad Pitt has been working for a long time but he never has gotten one, outside of obtaining one for producing 12 Years a Slave. Well, if you work with Quentin Tarantino it’s a good chance you’re going to get nominated because Tarantino’s storytelling forces actors to be their best. And Brad Pitt’s acting turned into an Oscar. Great job!

Taika Waititi is Now an Oscar Winner!

Taika has already shone how brilliant he can be when he made Thor: Ragnarok into the hit superhero movie that surpassed all expectations. Now, he’s only solidified himself as the supersmart writer/director that we all know he is. Come on LucasFilm, do what’s right and get this man to make a Star Wars movie.

As a young black woman who has locks to see this documentary celebrating ethnic hair win an Oscar was beautiful.

Hildur Guðnadóttir Becomes the First Female Composer to Win an Oscar

Oh my goodness, I was already thrilled when she won a Golden Globe for her work on Joker but to win an Oscar… Wow! Amazing! It just goes to show, women can make powerful music too.

Parasite Dominates!

Bong Joon Ho, Kang-ho Song, Sun-kyun Lee, Yeo-jeong Jo, Yang-kwon Moon, Ha-jun Lee, So-dam Park, and Jin Won Han at an event for The Oscars (2020)

Yes, the nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress were nearly devoid of any actors of color besides Cynthia Erivo but Parasite, a South Korean film, would go on to win most of the big awards. Not only did it win Best Foreign Film but Bong Joon-Ho would go on to win Best Original Screenplay, Best Director! and the film would win Best Picture too!

Wow, wow, wow, wow. Parasite is the first foreign film to also win Best Picture. What a way to start the decade!

All in all, representation across all of the categories should be highlighted more but it was still a great night for people of color at the Oscars and I thoroughly enjoyed nearly every moment of it. I can’t wait to see Parasite and see if it really is worth the hype.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a beautiful day.
