A Movie Ranking: Jennifer Lawrence

For years I knew who Jennifer Lawrence was simply because I kept seeing the Hunger Games movies come out. The first movie I actually ever saw her in was X-Men: Days of Future Past where she plays the character Raven/Mystique. To be honest, I don’t think she’s that great of an actress even though she has managed to nab an Oscar for her performance in the film Silver Linings Playbook. All of her roles feel memorable but somewhat one-dimensional. She doesn’t capture my attention like Jessica Chastain or Anne Hathaway. She’s just…there playing a tough heroine who you want to root for.

However, I thought it would be fun to highlight her for this week’s A Movie Ranking.

6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

I really, really enjoyed the first Hunger Games film. I mean, I was riveted. Its sequel disappointed me big time. While the story could’ve easily gotten better it lost steam once the all-star version of The Hunger Games started, devolving into a storyline that I found to be extremely boring. And Katniss lost steam for me as well. It became more of a romance film than a riveting movie. By the conclusion, I was not enticed to watch the next two films.

5. X-Men: First Class

Maybe it was because I entered this movie late…nah, this movie is pretty so-so. The big battle at the end had HORRIBLE CGI and was so bad, in fact, that I couldn’t finish it. Maybe it’s the origin stories of the characters that make X-Men fans like this movie so much (or maybe it’s all of the hot ladies with their skimpy clothing.) All in all, not a fan.

And who did the makeup in this movie?! Mystique looks ridiculous. I’m so glad they fixed her because I could just not get into her character with her looking so fake in the blue prosthetics and cheap-looking red wig.

4. X-Men: Apocalypse

Not bad…but the final act was what brought the film’s quality down big-time. And honestly, Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse was a very bad idea. He was less menacing than Ronin in Guardians of the Galaxy and that’s saying something.

Jennifer Lawrence delivered yet again another one-dimensional performance. There were no standout moments, no tear-jerking scenes, just classic Raven/Mystique being classic Raven/Mystique.

3. The Hunger Games

This first movie was REALLY good. It felt like the proper beginning of a well-adapted YA series. The story was riveting, the characters were intriguing, the actual Hunger Games were anything but boring, it was very, very good. And Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen felt like that bad*** YA heroine you’ve always wanted to see on the big screen. I rushed to the sequel expecting something just as great. Gosh, Catching Fire was underwhelming. 😢

2. X-Men: Dark Phoenix

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) - IMDb

Once again, Jennifer Lawrence delivered a very one-note performance as Mystique. There is never any depth, never any moments that stand out and make the viewer say, “Wow, this lady can act.” Unless you want to give her bonus acting points for a painful-looking death scene. But anyone can act short of breath and die with their head tilted and eyes wide open.

However, it is her death that adds that bit of depth to this film that makes the story somewhat riveting. Honestly, I don’t know why people hate this movie so much. I’ve seen it twice now and am totally up for a third viewing whenever it comes on again. I like it…what can I tell you.

1. X-Men: Days of Future Past

Once again, I feel like Jennifer Lawrence delivers a very forgettable performance as Mystique in this film. Does the character have the best storyline of the recent X-Men films? Absolutely! But it is not her that carries this film…unless of course, you’re there to drool over Mystique’s various looks, blue or otherwise.

However, who does manage to carry this movie is the always impressive performance by Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, Michael Fassbender’s mindblowing portrayal of Magneto, and James McAvoy’s definitely best performance as Professor X. They make this movie interesting and a sheer pleasure to watch.

So there’s my movie ranking. I thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely day.

  1. I really love your post. You are very honest and unafraid of giving an unpopular opinion. I do think that you should watch some of Jennifer Lawrence’s stuff outside of the hunger games and X-men it’s a it obvious that she was kinda phoning it in because she wanted to move on to other things. I think you could watch some of her other stuff like winter’s bone which I think was her best performance and silver linings playbook. Maybe it could change your mind or maybe not👍
