Throwback Friday: I’ve Discovered a Potential Connection Between Finn and Leia’s Outfits

While doing my Who’s Your Favorite? series which featured an analysis of Leia’s several outfits throughout her time in this franchise I noticed something that blew my mind.

The three major characters of this sequel trilogy have been compared to the trio of the original trilogy which of course consisted of Luke, Han, and Leia, but it seems that J.J Abrams is playing to that similarity more closely than you might imagine.

Throughout most of the original trilogy, we saw Leia in white but when she returned for Return of the Jedi they gave her a different style.

In Return of the Jedi, she is given a rebel outfit that is completely different than the styles she had before that time.

And like Leia, Finn’s outfit in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi was very basic, with both looks holding onto the Poe Dameron jacket.

But if you look at Finn’s new outfit it’s a straight homage to Leia’s look. The brown long-sleeved shirt, the blue pants, the vest, it’s slightly different but it’s totally reminiscent of Leia’s Return of the Jedi look, which is absolutely fascinating!

This was an observation that I just had to share and I thank you for reading. Have a great day and May the Force be with you.

That Marvelous Costume: ‘Gladiator’

Gladiator is clearly one of the best movies ever made, delivering powerful performances by Russel Crowe, Connie Nielson, and Joaquin Phoenix, fantastic action that felt legitimately epic, and a tremendous story that one can’t help being riveted by. But, like the last two films that I have highlighted for this series, Gladiator also shines for its costumes, costumes that would go on to win Janty Yates her only Oscar for Best Costume Design, and deservedly so.

You have the stunning dresses Lucilla wears and the imposing garments Commodus dons as the new Roman Emperor. Continue reading That Marvelous Costume: ‘Gladiator’

That Marvelous Costume: ‘Black Panther’

Last week for my first segment of That Marvelous Costume I focused on the film Phantom Thread, a movie whose only Oscar win went to Mark Bridges for Best Costume Design. This week I’m focusing on a film that got similar love from The Academy for Best Costume Design and that is Black Panther.

Forget the deeper meanings behind the story or the riveting cast of actors who brought home Oustanding Cast in a Motion Picture at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the costumes are where it’s at.

Whether we’re talking about Nakia’s style which has a specific green theme because of being born in the River Tribe.

You have General Okoye and the Dora Milaje clad in red but it’s very clear to point out who their leader is just by the stark gold that Okoye wears.

erikkillmonger

Erik Killmonger is shown in blue clothing to symbolize colonialism according to Ryan Coogler which is fascinating.

T’Challa looks expectedly regal in elegant robes fit for a king that change color depending on the mood of the scene. T’Challa’s white robe in the spirit world is utterly stunning.

But beyond the colors and the impressive tailoring, there is a sense of detail to every costume that every character wears, whether they are the extras in the background or one of the main characters, making it easy to comprehend why Ruth E. Carter won for Best Costume Design…finally.

All in all, the looks in this film are amazing.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.

That Marvelous Costume: ‘Phantom Thread’

Hello everyone, it’s Monday morning and with a brand new site design and a sense of vigor after a much-needed break last week, I’m here to share a new segment I will be posting every week: That Marvelous Costume.

It focuses on highlighting my favorite movie costumes from various films and today, for my first segment of this series, I’m focusing on one of the underrated Oscar-nominated films of 2017, Phantom Thread. Enjoy!

phantom6

Phantom Thread‘s only Oscar win wouldn’t go to two-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis or his fellow nominee, Lesley Manville for Best Supporting Actress. It wouldn’t go to Johnny Greenwood for Best Original Musical Score or Paul Thomas Anderson for Best Directing. Nor would it receive the big award for Best Picture. It’s win was given to Mark Bridges for Best Costume Design…and rightfully so.

Phantom Thread, a story about an exquisite dressmaker/long-time bachelor who meets a waitress and falls in love with her, is one of the best films I’ve ever seen and doesn’t get enough praise for its astounding achievement in quality movie making. However, one of its most engaging aspects are the beautiful outfits each character, small or major, wear in this film. Continue reading That Marvelous Costume: ‘Phantom Thread’

What’s Your Favorite Princess Leia Look?

Star Wars. It’s a story that resides in a galaxy far, far away, where powerful men and women dressed in iconic robes and wielding different colored laser swords have mysterious powers and follow their tales of destiny while fighting an endless battle between good and evil. There’s a lot to this incredible story that has spanned decades and wowed generations of fans and one of the elements to this franchise that is so much fun to explore is the characters’ individual styles.

Each and every character has a specific style that is created with such fine detail and so for the next couple of weeks, my Who’s Your Favorite? series will be brought to you every day and targeting a specific character and their overall style through their time in the franchise. And who better to start this series than with one of the most iconically dressed fictional characters, Princess Leia?

Enjoy! Continue reading What’s Your Favorite Princess Leia Look?

What’s Your Favorite Padme Look: Part 3?

For this final segment of What’s Your Favorite Look? I’m finishing it off with Padme’s designs in Revenge of the Sith. Now, because I have extended the What’s Your Favorite? topic for nearly two weeks there will not be a Who’s Your Favorite? topic this Sunday but all will return to normal next Sunday.

So, on that note, here are her dazzling looks from Revenge of the Sith. Enjoy!

The Mother-To-Be Outfit

When Padme was first introduced in Revenge of the Sith she wears this fascinating velvet cloak to hide her form to prevent anyone from noticing her pregnancy. She also wears her hair in cinnamon buns as yet another homage to Leia, the daughter she would bear in a few months. Continue reading What’s Your Favorite Padme Look: Part 3?
