My Tribute to Carrie Fisher

[This is a repost for Carrie Fisher’s birthday.]

Star Wars is a franchise that has lived and transcended generations. The cultural phenomenon began way back in 1977 and now, after 40 years, the excitement for this seemingly unending franchise is even stronger. The question is, what was it that made this science-fiction space opera resonate with so many people? Was it the lore of the story, was it the music, was it the characters? I believe there was a collaboration of all of these different aspects but the characters were a huge part of why A New Hope 40 years ago became such a global hit.

You had Luke, the simple farm boy who wanted to explore the stars and follow in the footsteps of his “dead” father. Then there was Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi, the wise mentor. You had the rascally Han Solo, a scoundrel at first meeting but a hero at heart.

And finally, you have Princess Leia, which this post is dedicated to.

At the time when A New Hope entered theaters in 1977 princesses were defined as damsels in distress stuck in towers. Princess Leia rewrote that narrative.

Princess Leia didn’t run screaming from the stormtroopers, she shot at them. Princess Leia didn’t whimper in the face of Darth Vader, she patronized him. This was pretty much unheard of in that day and age of movies.

She was one of the pioneers of all the strong women you have in film today. Throughout A New Hope she never played the role of damsel in distress. And yes, she was rescued, but she didn’t treat her rescuers like they were “her heroes.” She instead told them off for not coming up with a better escape plan. What’s Your Favorite Princess Leia Look?

Star Wars. It’s a story that resides in a galaxy far, far away, where powerful men and women dressed in iconic robes and wielding different colored laser swords have mysterious powers and follow their tales of destiny while fighting an endless battle between good and evil. There’s a lot to this incredible story that has spanned decades and wowed generations of fans and one of the elements to this franchise that is so much fun to explore is the characters’ individual styles.

Each and every character has a specific style that is created with such fine detail and so for the next couple of weeks, my Who’s Your Favorite? series will be brought to you every day and targeting a specific character and their overall style through their time in the franchise. And who better to start this series than with one of the most iconically dressed fictional characters, Princess Leia?

This Segment of ‘The Last Jedi’ Perfectly Sums Up Leia’s Entire Journey and Her Constant Triumphs

I’ve watched The Last Jedi over twenty times and one of the most important scenes in the film is actually one of the quietest moments in the movie. And that scene which I am referring to is when Leia is shown sitting by herself in the cruiser, Ninka.

Throughout Leia’s involvement in Star Wars, we haven’t often seen her grieve even though she has obviously experienced so much loss.

She lost nearly her entire crew aboard the ship, Tantative IV, to Darth Vader and his stormtroopers. Then she had to watch her home planet of Alderaan get obliterated before her very eyes (and her mother and father along with it.) Who knows what tragedies she saw in the battle against the Empire during those unknown years between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. She had to endure seeing Han Solo getting frozen in carbonite, nearly dying in the process. And then, even after the Rebellion defeated the Empire, the hardships she would face were far from over. Throwback Saturday: My Favorite New Things From ‘The Last Jedi’

As what happens every once in the blue moon I forget to share with you all a Throwback Friday post, leaving me to have to write a Throwback “Saturday” post. But this one, in particular, is fun because it’s a look back two years ago when the Vanity Fair issue featuring The Last Jedi came out. So, on that note, here’s a flashback to that exciting day two years ago. Enjoy!

Two Years Ago

The Last Jedi is coming out later out this year and I am ecstatic! In April fans (like me) were finally shown a teaser for the highly anticipated film and was introduced to a brand new character, the small but mighty Rose. Ever since the Star Wars Celebration, there has been little news about The Last Jedi, even fewer spoilers, and a whole bunch of theories fans have tried to glean from the teaser. Then out of nowhere last Tuesday Vanity Fair let loose a fantastic spread for The Last Jedi and it blew my mind. There were exclusive photos, interesting interviews, and new characters to marvel over and theorize about. So on that note let me talk about some of my favorite moments from the awesome spread.

The Power of a Princess

Princess Leia, one of the greatest heroines to ever be conceived in film, is celebrated worldwide. Her strength inspires, her iconic looks are worn by millions of female Star Wars fans every year, and even though Carrie Fisher has passed on her legacy still lives on.

I wasn’t going to write a post about Princess Leia today, that wasn’t my intention, but as I rummaged through photos of Return of the Jedi on imdb.com I bumped into one of the most beautiful photos of Carrie Fisher as Leia that I have ever been lucky enough to lay my eyes on.

leiablackandwhite

Leia’s iconic golden bikini look has received many opinions. Some love this look for its revealing nature and Carrie Fisher’s incredible skill of pulling it off so well. Some believe that it’s a degrading look for Princess Leia, as it symbolizes her unwillingly portraying a slave who must dance for the nasty slug named Jabba the Hutt, which is all the more justifiable in this #MeToo era.

For me, I’m caught between both worlds. On one side I think it is a bit demeaning seeing Leia, a woman, forced to wear a metal bikini which sounds all the more horrid when you hear of Carrie Fisher’s accounts of filming those scenes and the discomfort of it all. But then there’s another side of me who loves that even though she was forced into such humiliating servitude for Jabba the Hutt she soon changed that narrative, fighting against him with every turn and eventually choking him herself. Girl power!

This photo represents that power. That independence, that strength that reminds us of the reason why she’s one of the greatest heroines and actresses ever to grace our world. It’s a very simple photo too.

She gazes off to some unknown location, the photo set in black and white, providing an air of mystique to the photo. Her form, half bare for all to see, is a symbol of the confidence she bears in herself, mentally and physically. And with the flow of the wind, the photo becomes 100% epic.

So no, I wasn’t going to write a post about Princess Leia today, but this photo inspired me with its unwavering beauty and I hope it brings a bit of joy to your day as well.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a beautiful day.

R.I.P Carrie Fisher and May the Force be with you, always.

What’s Your Favorite Leia Moment?

It’s another Sunday and that means it’s time to visit another segment of Who’s Your Favorite? Today, however, is rather special for Star Wars fans around the world because it is the late-great Carrie Fisher’s birthday (she would’ve been 62.) So, to honor the woman who has brought so many smiles to people across the globe, she is the subject of today’s Who’s Your Favorite?

Now, Leia has countless memorable moments during her time in this franchise but I’m going to take at least one exciting moment from each film that she’s graced for this list. Enjoy!

1. A Rogue One Surprise

leiahope1

Rogue One brought some fantastic surprises near the end of the film as it swiftly led into A New Hope‘s story and one of those shocking reveals was CGI Leia. Not only was it brilliant but it proved that technology could be used in truly exciting ways for future Star Wars films.
