How Did ‘Chicago’ Win Best Picture?

Chicago; it was the last musical to win Best Picture and I finally watched it last night. Let me tell you, I was SOOOOO BOOOOORRRRED! Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones star in this burlesque musical about a couple of murderesses who are trying to get off the hook with the help of a crooked lawyer.

There was nothing special about this movie, at least nothing quite as memorable as the likes of An American in Paris or The Sound of Music or even West Side Story for that matter. The songs were forgettable and there was nothing truly likable about this movie. I didn’t like the characters, I didn’t like the choreography or the performances. I mean…I just didn’t like this movie.

How the heck did this nab the Best Picture award instead of the heartbreakingly beautiful tale that is The Pianist or The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers for that matter?! It’s laughable. Chicago is a mediocre film, people! Am I the only one who thinks that?

Chicago is so bad I’m pretty sure La La Land is better, and that’s saying something. If you’ve seen Chicago what did you think? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

What’s Your Favorite Best-Picture Winning Musical?

There have only been four Best-Picture winning musicals. A few years ago, La La Land almost became the fifth musical to receive such an honor but was left as a runner-up to the critically-acclaimed film, Moonlight. I’ve currently only seen two of these musicals (An American in Paris and The Sound of Music) but I am determined to one day watch them all.

For this week’s Who’s Your Favorite? I thought this would be a fun question to pop for you, my fellow movie lover. So, considering that I haven’t seen all of these movies I’m going to get straight to the point and not delve into detailing each film: which musical is your favorite?

For me, in comparing An American in Paris and The Sound of Music, The Sound of Music is undoubtedly my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, I love An American in Paris for its hummable score and lovely songs, but The Sound of Music touches my heart in a way that most movies can’t.

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
