A Nice Reimagining of ‘Mulan’

As of right now, the best live-action Disney remakes have been Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. I can gladly say that Mulan joins their ranks.

Let me be clear. Mulan is nothing special. Its storytelling follows the thread that the original has created but adds some much needed modern twists that I legitimately enjoyed; one such being the introduction of the witch, Xianniang, a nice secondary female addition to the plot that made the story just a little better.

Mulan’s love interest, Honghui, played by Yoson An, is appropriately handsome and charming. In fact, he’s much more likable than the cartoon version. I liked the idea of him being a fellow soldier instead of her commanding officer. Speaking of commanding officers; Donnie Yen, Ip Man, Chirrut Imwe, or Commander Tung, whatever name you call him by he’s awesome and I loved that he was in this film.

Oh, I wish I could say this movie was perfect. Unfortunately, like most of these remakes, it failed to get through its menial one hour and fifty-five minute runtime without hitting some speed bumps.

Movie Review Flashback: Netflix Delights With Two Original Movies

Last night after watching the premiere of American Ninja Warrior I was bored and desperate for a new movie to watch and so I went browsing on Netflix and I ultimately came across two Netflix Original Movies that were not only really fun to watch but actually very entertaining as well. So for all of you fellow Netflix subscribers and movie lovers I’m here to provide you spoiler-free reviews on these two original films.

True Memoirs of an International Assassin

If you love action movies and you love the comedian, Kevin James, this is a film worth watching for so many reasons. One, it’s got humor which is always a plus. Secondly, it’s surprisingly enjoyable if you’re just bored and needing a decent movie to satiate the new movie thirst. And three, it keeps you on your toes from beginning to end.

Kevin James’ character, Sam, is an aspiring author who writes a fictional story about an assassin and his top secret missions but when his publisher takes his story and spruces up the tale by tweaking the title and calling it “True” Memoirs of an International Assassin rather than its original title (Memoirs of an International Assassin) a lot of trouble and unwanted attention comes Sam’s way and he partakes in a non-stop adventure that’s truly exciting from beginning to end.

It’s also an entirely family-friendly movie with the exception of a bit of cursing and some violence but besides that there’s nothing inappropriate about this film whatsoever which is always refreshing. What would I give the movie, you might ask? I’d give 3.5 out of 5 stars and 84 out of a 100. It wasn’t the greatest action movie I’ve ever seen but it was very, very enjoyable indeed. Definitely take a look at it if you ever get the chance.
