Is ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ the Perfect Sequel?

When A New Hope came out 42 years ago people didn’t know there was going to be a sequel. It, sure enough, didn’t seem like it. A New Hope told a solid story with unsuspecting heroes who defeated the bad guys and were given medals in an unforgettable celebration at the end of the movie that made it seem like this story was over. But oh no, the story hadn’t ended. In fact, it had just begun.

Three years later, it’s 1980, and The Empire Strikes Back is in theaters. Star Wars was a practically a perfect movie. Who would want to continue something that didn’t need to be tampered with? But George Lucas, with the help of the magnificent Lawrence Kasdan, built on A New Hope‘s momentum and told a story that was so utterly magnificent that it’s still regarded as the zenith of sequel movie making.

Everything about The Empire Strikes Back was better than the first. The planets were more awe-inspiring, the character developments were phenomenal, Darth Vader was on the next level of awesome, it displayed a compelling romance between Han and Leia that will go down as one of the greatest movie love stories of all time, the action was absolutely incredible, and it dropped a movie bombshell that no one could’ve seen coming.

The Brilliance of ‘A New Hope’

I watched A New Hope a couple of days ago and found myself once again wowed by the fact that this was the first Star Wars movie. George Lucas is an absolutely brilliant writer, creating a story that still hasn’t been replicated to this day.

There are a lot of things about this film that displays why this movie ascended to instant fandom but the most brilliant about this film is its attention to detail and it’s lived-in qualities. Unlike most science-fiction movies, there are no stark clean settings or futuristic worlds that feel fictional. Star Wars is set in a world with buildings that look like they’ve been around for hundreds of years, clunky ships and casual garments, normal hairstyles and not-that-special-looking weapons (besides the lightsabers of course.) Palpatine Returns! Was it a Good Thing?

The Rise of Skywalker would bode the end of the Skywalker Saga. Meaning, J.J Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio had to find a way to tie in all of the previous eight films into one film. One such character that could’ve easily brought the three trilogies together was indeed Palpatine/Darth Sidious who was believed to be dead in Return of the Jedi. But after hearing his infamous cackle at the end of the teaser trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, it seemed clear that Abrams had something fantastic up his sleeve. Unfortunately, that would not be the case.

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD! Continue reading Palpatine Returns! Was it a Good Thing?
