Which Redhead Reigns Supreme?

If you haven’t noticed there’s been a lot of redheads in movies lately. And I don’t mean natural gingers like Jessica Chastain or Amy Adams. I’m talking about actresses wearing red wigs to match their red-headed characters. It’s an interesting trend that has only grown since Aquaman introduced the fearsome warrior princess Mera (or as I like to call her, Warrior Ariel) to the superhero world.

And don’t even get me started about Serinda Swan’s nightmarish rendition of the red-haired Medusa on the awful ABC mini-series, Inhumans.

When it comes to female superheroes and red wigs there’s a quality grade to each hairstyle, and clearly Jean Grey, Mystique, Mera, and Black Widow sport the red-haired look in the best ways. So, on that note, let’s take a closer look at these hairstyles and determine who is Queen of the Red Wigs. Enjoy! Continue reading Which Redhead Reigns Supreme?

‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Has One Major Problem: Its Treatment of Women

X-Men: Dark Phoenix was the final installment in the X-Men franchise before Disney would get its Mickey Mouse paws on these characters and stories and while it was received with scathing reviews I happen to enjoy the film. But there is a problem. A problem that I find is a common theme when it comes to these superhero movies.

In Avengers: Endgame Black Widow, a character fans had grown to love over the years, was killed, ceremoniously, but killed nonetheless without given any chance to truly shine. We saw her cry, we saw her sacrifice herself, but she was never able to kick butt in any awesome action scenes and she wasn’t around during the final battle against Thanos, which only felt even more gutwrenching as the women in Marvel assembled for a powerful charge against Thanos’ forces in one of the best scenes in the entire MCU.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix treats its female characters with the same sad lack of awesomeness. Continue reading ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Has One Major Problem: Its Treatment of Women

Who’s Your Favorite X-Men Character?

Considering that I’ve been watching so many X-Men movies lately I had to revisit this post for this week’s Who’s Your Favorite? Enjoy!

(My X-Men knowledge is still somewhat limited so I will be listing the characters I am most familiar with.)

Cyclops

cyclops

Cyclops has always been a cool character because of his interesting eye beam ability and the same can still be said from this most recent rendition of the character. While I never knew that much about the X-Men I still knew who Cyclops was when I was a kid and that shows the impact this hero had on me as a child. I can’t wait to see who will bring him to life this time around.

Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler is pretty cool, actually. His teleporting abilities are pretty fantastic but it’s when he turns into a deadly wrecking machine that he really gets his chance to shine. I’ve only seen him in the newer X-Men movies so I’m interested to eventually see him in the older X-Men films as well.

Mystique

Mystique is easily one of the coolest concepts of a character in the superhero world. The fact that she’s this shape-shifting alien-ish sort of being is remarkable and it’s what makes her so intriguing. I like to think of her as the blue Black Widow.

It should be interesting to see what sort of cameos we may see as she shapeshifts into current or previously deceased MCU characters when she appears in later films.

What’s So Bad About ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’?

Okay, before I start this review let me provide a disclaimer; I don’t know anything about the X-Men comics or the classic X-Men animated series or really anything about their characters and their storylines. The first X-Men that I watched all the way through was X-Men: Days of Future Past which my father took me to see in the movie theaters. I enjoyed it but I wasn’t ultimately enticed to see what the other movies are about. The second X-Men movie that I decided to watch with my family one night was Logan which was also pretty good but didn’t make me want to see what the other movies were about. And my third X-Men movie experience has been Dark Phoenix as of yesterday.

I vaguely know about Jean Grey’s comic book storyline as Dark Phoenix and I have a strong hunch that it was not represented properly in the film. However, as someone who isn’t an X-Men fan and is just watching the movie for the superhero action, I found this movie to be mildly enjoyable.

No, it wasn’t the best movie I’d ever seen. Nor was it as good as nearly all of Marvel Studios’ movies but it was far better than I expected after hearing the horrible reviews. Continue reading What’s So Bad About ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’?

Who’s Your Favorite X-Men Character?

(This is a repost.)

The X-Men are an awesome array of unique characters with incredible abilities. It’s only until recently that I’ve begun to actually care and pay attention to the different heroes and I have to say, they’re pretty awesome. Their movies aren’t as great or easy to follow (timeline-wise) as the MCU movies but if you like superheroes there are tons of heroes to get behind in this franchise. With this many cool characters to enjoy there will always be debate of who’s the best of the X-Men. And that’s why they are the topic of this week’s segment of Who’s Your Favorite? Here are the characters.

(My X-Men knowledge is limited so I will be listing the mainstream characters that I know.)

Cyclops

Cyclops has always been a cool character because of his interesting eye beam ability and the same can still be said from this most recent rendition of the character. While I don’t know much about the X-Men I knew who Cyclops was in my younger age and that shows the impact this hero had on me as a child.

Mystique

Mystique is easily one of the coolest concepts of a character in the superhero world. The fact that she’s this shape-shifting alien-ish sort of being is remarkable awesome and it’s what makes her so cool. She’s also a great fighter as well. All in all, Mystique is pretty cool.
