A Nice Reimagining of ‘Mulan’

As of right now, the best live-action Disney remakes have been Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. I can gladly say that Mulan joins their ranks.

Let me be clear. Mulan is nothing special. Its storytelling follows the thread that the original has created but adds some much needed modern twists that I legitimately enjoyed; one such being the introduction of the witch, Xianniang, a nice secondary female addition to the plot that made the story just a little better.

Mulan’s love interest, Honghui, played by Yoson An, is appropriately handsome and charming. In fact, he’s much more likable than the cartoon version. I liked the idea of him being a fellow soldier instead of her commanding officer. Speaking of commanding officers; Donnie Yen, Ip Man, Chirrut Imwe, or Commander Tung, whatever name you call him by he’s awesome and I loved that he was in this film.

Oh, I wish I could say this movie was perfect. Unfortunately, like most of these remakes, it failed to get through its menial one hour and fifty-five minute runtime without hitting some speed bumps.

Counting Down My 20 Favorite Trailers: #11-‘Mulan’

I love Mulan. I have since I was a child. When they announced they were going to make a live-action version of the film I was excited, then I saw the trailer and got even more excited.

There have been several trailers of the film but it is the official one that has impacted me the most. Here it is.

I don’t know why but this trailer always almost brings me to tears. I think it’s the use of the music for “Reflection” as the background for the story of this trailer that just utterly ruins me! Plus, it just looks like it’s going to be really fun to watch.

I love this trailer!!!

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a lovely day.

Movie Review Flashback: My Review of ‘The Lion King’

The reboot of The Lion King was one of the highest-grossing films last year, making just north of $1.6 billion but was met with mixed reviews. While the visuals were praised immensely the main consensus was that The Lion King was a tired rehash of the previous film. As I watched the movie last night for the first time on Disney+ I was excited.

After my recent viewing of Aladdin which turned out to be quite the treat, I was expecting the same level of joy from The Lion King. And I was having a great time…until I wasn’t.

The first half wowed me, leaving me staring at the screen stricken with awe. Yes, it was very repetitive of the original film but guess what, The Lion King is perfect. No reason to try to get fancy and change something that is so fantastic. It was the second half of the film that left me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. Movie Review Flashback: ‘Aladdin’ Is the Best Disney Movie I’ve Seen in Years

Last year Aladdin arrived in theaters to mixed reviews. While some enjoyed it most felt like it was a bland interpretation of the classic animated film…however, it would still go on to make a little over a billion dollars. A couple of days ago Aladdin became available to watch on Disney+ and because my family and I were interested in the film, mainly to see how Will Smith injected new life into the infamous Genie, we decided to watch it.

At first, the film started a little rapidly and I found myself beginning to understand why the film received mediocre reviews. And then…as the story continued onward and the narrative began to slightly stray from the animated version I started finding myself invested in the film, which clearly grasped me from the beginning with its STUNNING visuals. I mean, gosh these Disney movies are eye-catching.

When Will Smith’s Genie showed up, however, I was pretty much sold. He was so funny, so fantastic, and his rendition of “Friend Like Me” was absolutely perfect. I could not stop smiling…and neither could my family. Continue reading Movie Review Flashback: ‘Aladdin’ Is the Best Disney Movie I’ve Seen in Years

Throwback Friday: The New Trailer for ‘Mulan’ Looks Amazing

I’ve seen Mulan maybe, four or five times. In short, I like the movie a lot. She’s one of my favorite Disney princesses because she’s one of the few ladies depicted in the Disney classics whose storyline isn’t involved with finding a love interest or being saved by some dashing prince.

Disney is remaking a whole bunch of Disney classics and the latest to join the ranks of these live-action films is Mulan, which is set to come out next March. Here’s the trailer.

Um…wow!!!! Like I said before, I love Mulan and this trailer was just…perfect. Featuring a brand new character in a villainous witch, a new pet in a beautiful phoenix for Mulan, and the music of the Golden Globe-nominated song, “Reflection”, playing in the background, this trailer wowed me in ways I wasn’t expecting.

In fact, it made me actually kind of emotional, it was that beautiful! Continue reading Throwback Friday: The New Trailer for ‘Mulan’ Looks Amazing
