Ranking the ‘Mad Max’ Movies

Science-fiction is a microcosm of ideas both uber-rad and ridiculously atrocious. There have been some terrible science-fiction movies over the years but the ones that are good are reeeaaal good. The Mad Max franchise is a testament to why science-fiction is one of the coolest fictional genres of all time.

Told by Australian screenwriter/director George Miller, Mad Max is the rock-and-roll version of science-fiction. Filmed as an Australian movie in the land down under, these movies weren’t designed to become something that the entire world would love but with, at the time, the unknown Australian actor Mel Gibson at the helm of this franchise it was destined to become one of the greatest science-fiction franchises of all time.

Recently my sister and I watched the first three Mad Max for the first time and it was nothing if not exhilarating. My father has been talking about The Road Warrior for years. Now I know why. It’s pretty awesome, especially for 1981. So, with no further delay, I’m going to share my rankings of this very, very fantastic science-fiction gem. Enjoy! A Movie Ranking: Charlize Theron

I didn’t know anything about Charlize Theron until Mad Max: Fury Road, in which case she became one of my favorite actresses in Hollywood. Her toughness oozed off of the screen and suddenly I wanted to see more movies with her. Today I wanted to highlight her for this week’s A Movie Ranking. Enjoy!

4. Astroboy

Astro Boy (2009)

As a kid, I wasn’t a fan of Astroboy. Even now, I see this poster and can’t help feeling annoyed.

3. The Fate of the Furious

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Ludacris, Michelle Rodriguez, and Tyrese Gibson in The Fate of the Furious (2017)

Charlize Theron was a surprisingly great villain for this movie. At first, I thought she was going to be wack but I enjoyed her role in the film. I can’t wait to see what happens in Furious 9.

2. Hancock

Will Smith in Hancock (2008)

Hancock is one of those films that you don’t expect to be good but turns out to be great. I was so surprised by this movie which continuously surprised me and Charlize Theron’s role alongside Will Smith was perfect. I’ve only seen the film once but I did like it very much when I watched it.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

This isn’t surprising. Charlize Theron killed it as Furiosa in this film, portraying the fierce heroine that you expect and want to see in an action movie.

These are the only movies I’ve seen starring Charlize Theron but I hope to see more movies of hers in the future. And I would especially love it if she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the years to come. That would be awesome.

A Movie Ranking: Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy has grown to be one of my favorite actors of all time. His nuanced performances allow him to stick out as he brings a certain depth to every character I’ve seen him play. Over the years, I have discovered that I have seen more films with him than I first imagined, making him the perfect topic for this week’s A Movie Ranking. Enjoy!

6. Venom

Tom Hardy in Venom (2018)

Venom is the worst movie I’ve seen Tom Hardy play in and easily my least favorite work of his. The accent doesn’t come off naturally nor does his performance as Eddie Brock. The film is also pretty bad. I will say this though, in better hands the movie would’ve been much better.

We’ll see how Venom 2 handles Eddie/Venom’s story in a more concise fashion (even though the prospect of Woody Harrelson as Carnage seems pretty cornballs.) Continue reading A Movie Ranking: Tom Hardy
