That Marvelous Costume: ‘Phantom Thread’

Hello everyone, it’s Monday morning and with a brand new site design and a sense of vigor after a much-needed break last week, I’m here to share a new segment I will be posting every week: That Marvelous Costume.

It focuses on highlighting my favorite movie costumes from various films and today, for my first segment of this series, I’m focusing on one of the underrated Oscar-nominated films of 2017, Phantom Thread. Enjoy!

Phantom Thread‘s only Oscar win wouldn’t go to two-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis or his fellow nominee, Lesley Manville for Best Supporting Actress. It wouldn’t go to Johnny Greenwood for Best Original Musical Score or Paul Thomas Anderson for Best Directing. Nor would it receive the big award for Best Picture. It’s win was given to Mark Bridges for Best Costume Design…and rightfully so.

Phantom Thread, a story about an exquisite dressmaker/long-time bachelor who meets a waitress and falls in love with her, is one of the best films I’ve ever seen and doesn’t get enough praise for its astounding achievement in quality movie making. However, one of its most engaging aspects are the beautiful outfits each character, small or major, wear in this film. Continue reading That Marvelous Costume: ‘Phantom Thread’

The Ten Best Movies of the Decade

It’s the final day of the decade, meaning it’s a chance to look back and reflect on the groundbreaking, eye-widening, truly impactful films of the decade that have managed to make me laugh, cry, and downright lose it with happiness. So, with no further delay, here are the ten best movies of the decade.

10. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a welcome surprise that I don’t think anyone saw coming. Miles Morales, a beloved rendition of the iconic Spider-Man character, was finally afforded his own film and the result was mindblowing.

With an animation style that feels like watching a comic book in motion mixed with sometimes startling realism at times, Into the Spider-Verse has easily become one of my favorite movies of the decade. Continue reading The Ten Best Movies of the Decade

‘Phantom Thread’ Is a Beautiful Piece of Art

(This is a repost of one of my favorite movies.)

In preparation for the Oscars this year my family and I have begun to look back at some of the Oscar-nominated films last year that we missed. One of those particular movies happened to be Phantom Thread.

This wasn’t a film I was particularly interested in seeing but after my mother watched it and came away from the film with nothing but praise I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did. This movie is going to stick with me for a long time because of its unique brilliance. So, on that note, let me tell you a little bit about this film.

First off, I just want to say that Daniel Day-Lewis did an absolutely phenomenal job in this movie. This was his swan song and boy did he go out with a bang. I’m sure Gary Oldman’s stunning portrayal of Winston Churchill was undoubtedly worthy of an Oscar but in my opinion, I would’ve given the trophy to Mr. Day-Lewis. He played this part SO well but I figure, because he’s already won three Oscars, they gave Gary the trophy instead. Boo.

Anyway, this movie is amazing. It follows the story of a designer in England (Daniel Day-Lewis) whose dresses are unparalleled in their breathtaking quality. And these dresses are ravishing.

Time and time again I found myself staring at the screen in wide-eyed awe because of how beautiful the dresses were. This film’s only Oscar winner went to Best Costume Design and it rightfully deserved it. Okay, I’m getting off course again. Let me get back to telling you about the story.

Movie Review Flashback: ‘Phantom Thread’ Is a Beautiful Piece of Art

It’s been nearly five months since I watched Phantom Thread for the first time and even now, after only having seen the movie once, I still believe this is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. The story left me riveted and unable to guess where it was heading all the way to the very end.

So, in celebration of this wonderful movie, here’s a look back at my review of the film. Enjoy!
