Movie Review Flashback: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ Is Fun, Fun, Fun!

How do you base a movie off of an amusement park ride and get away with it? I don’t know how Walt Disney did it but they did it and I thank them for it.

A few years ago I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl for the first time and was utterly shocked at how great the film was. For years, I had heard about the movie and I knew about Jack Sparrow but it wasn’t until I watched the movie that I understood why these movies were so famous.

There are really good films that are full of depth and complexity like Joker or Blue Jasmine and while The Curse of the Black Pearl is nothing like that it is a pure joy to watch. It’s as if Disney bottled up the happiness a day at their parks can be and poured it all over this project, delivering an experience that is unforgettable.

The music is perfection, the action is riveting and exceptionally choreographed, the cast, namely Johnny Depp as the ever-lovable Jack Sparrow, is fantastic, and by the conclusion, I am filled with a boundless joy that not a lot of films can provide me.

If you’ve never been interested in giving the Pirates of the Caribbean films a look please do. They are F-U-N. FUN!!!!

I watched it again for only the third time last night and boy was it an enjoyable experience…as you can probably tell.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.

What’s Your Favorite ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Movie?

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be getting a much-needed reboot in the coming years with Margot Robbie set to star in it but until then we can only look fondly (or poorly) on the five movies Disney has given us featuring pirates, romance, and epic sword fighting duels.

Let’s take a closer at each film.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean was based on a ride at Disney World. Yes, an amusement park ride! Yet, with a great script and perfect casting, this movie excelled all expectations and is considered by many as one of the greatest Disney movies of all time.

With a very basic plot (a young man and rascally mentor of sorts must save a beautiful damsel from scary bad guys) the movie never fails to bring joy to the viewer. Its extensive runtime makes it feel like the film goes on forever and by the time it’s done you feel like you’ve enjoyed a spectacular ride. A Movie Ranking: Johnny Depp

My A Movie Ranking series usually happens on Thursday but, due to being busy, I’ve had to move it to the weekend and as you can see the actor for this week is the eclectic, always eccentric Johnny Depp. Enjoy!

8. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, AnnaSophia Robb, Julia Winter, Jordan Fry, and Philip Wiegratz in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

This movie was horrible. Absolutely horrible. I’m a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory fan since I was a child and this, this was a pain to watch. Plus, Johnny Depp came off as super creepy to me.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales

Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Kaya Scodelario, and Brenton Thwaites in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

I really enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean movies but this one, while decent, is hard to watch. Hence, 7th place on this list.

6. Alice in Wonderland

Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman in Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Alice in Wonderland was the first film that I ever saw in IMAX and because of that, I will always regard this movie with a particular fondness.

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

This movie, while undoubtedly entertaining, is easily the third weakest film in this franchise behind Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and it’s nowhere near as bad as the other movies on this list.

4. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Dan Fogler, William Nadylam, Alison Sudol, Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Claudia Kim, Zoë Kravitz, Ezra Miller, and Callum Turner in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

Not horrible but not great either.

3. Rango

Rango (2011)

I saw this as a child. I didn’t like it. I saw it recently as an adult. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

While this film is clearly the most concise story in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise it’s not my favorite simply because the next one is just so darn fun.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

I love this movie. Yes, it can be a bit confusing but it’s so much fun that it’s undoubtedly my favorite Pirates of the Caribbean film.

So, this is how I rank all of the Johnny Depp movies I’ve seen. One day, I’m sure Johnny Depp will infiltrate the comic book movie scene, whether that’ll be Marvel or DC Comics (most likely DC), and that should be interesting.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.

A Movie Ranking: Zoe Saldana

Zoe Saldana has become one of the most famous actresses in the world for her work in the science-fiction genre of cinema and she is easily one of my favorite actresses for her astounding work. So, here’s my ranking of all of the movies I’ve seen her in.

9. Star Trek: Beyond

Zoe Saldana in Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Maybe it’s because I’m not a Star Trek fan. No, when I think back on it, this movie was pretty awful. The story was unengaging, I didn’t care about any of the characters, and even though I watched it all the way through I found myself very disinterested by the end. Ranking 50 of the Top 250 Movies on IMDb: Part 2

Yesterday in the first part of this series I wrote which movies I listed from #50 to #40. Today I’m listing the next ten films in this series. Enjoy!

39. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

While the original Star Wars trilogy can easily be stated as one of the best movie trilogies of all time Return of the Jedi just isn’t my cup of tea. I mean, I love it. Don’t get me wrong. And I can honestly say I’ve seen this film over twenty-five times, but it is a tad bit boring. (And I’m not an Ewok fan.)

38. Toy Story

toystory

Toy Story is as unique as animated films get and while I’ve only seen it about two times I have fallen in love with this movie. It’s so much fun and has so many humorous elements because at the end of the day these are toys and it’s hilarious. I absolutely can’t wait to see what new adventures Toy Story 4 can bring us.
