Movie Review Flashback: ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ Is Fun, Fun, Fun!

How do you base a movie off of an amusement park ride and get away with it? I don’t know how Walt Disney did it but they did it and I thank them for it.

A few years ago I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl for the first time and was utterly shocked at how great the film was. For years, I had heard about the movie and I knew about Jack Sparrow but it wasn’t until I watched the movie that I understood why these movies were so famous.

There are really good films that are full of depth and complexity like Joker or Blue Jasmine and while The Curse of the Black Pearl is nothing like that it is a pure joy to watch. It’s as if Disney bottled up the happiness a day at their parks can be and poured it all over this project, delivering an experience that is unforgettable.

The music is perfection, the action is riveting and exceptionally choreographed, the cast, namely Johnny Depp as the ever-lovable Jack Sparrow, is fantastic, and by the conclusion, I am filled with a boundless joy that not a lot of films can provide me.

If you’ve never been interested in giving the Pirates of the Caribbean films a look please do. They are F-U-N. FUN!!!!

I watched it again for only the third time last night and boy was it an enjoyable experience…as you can probably tell.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day.

A Hilarious Thread That Connects These Three Characters

My sister and I have been reacquainting ourselves with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and we realized something rather hilarious. Every guy that Elizabeth Swann has ever kissed…DIES!

Jack Sparrow was the first to die after kissing Swann in an oopsy-daisy passionate smooch that turned out to be the ultimate swindle, leading to Sparrow’s abrupt departure to Davy Jones’ Locker via the gut of the Kraken.

Then Norrington, the man who wanted Elizabeth to be his wife in the first Pirates movie, ended up having to save Swann from Davy Jones’ clutches. In doing so, he gives Elizabeth a goodbye kiss and a moment later gets run through by a sword wielded by Will’s own father, which is a bit ironic. Lol.

And then last but definitely not least, there is Will who, after finally getting married to Elizabeth in the middle of a raging battle and sharing a passionate kiss in a rainstorm.

What’s Your Favorite ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Movie?

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be getting a much-needed reboot in the coming years with Margot Robbie set to star in it but until then we can only look fondly (or poorly) on the five movies Disney has given us featuring pirates, romance, and epic sword fighting duels.

Let’s take a closer at each film.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean was based on a ride at Disney World. Yes, an amusement park ride! Yet, with a great script and perfect casting, this movie excelled all expectations and is considered by many as one of the greatest Disney movies of all time.

With a very basic plot (a young man and rascally mentor of sorts must save a beautiful damsel from scary bad guys) the movie never fails to bring joy to the viewer. Its extensive runtime makes it feel like the film goes on forever and by the time it’s done you feel like you’ve enjoyed a spectacular ride. Margot Robbie Will Play the New Lead in an Upcoming ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Reboot

Since the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy ended in 2006 Disney has continued to try and find the magic that made those three films accumulate roughly $2.6 billion. In 2011, despite the mediocre response Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made over a billion dollars (😯) but the fifth movie in the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales wouldn’t be so lucky. Despite not performing as well as Disney had hoped on that Memorial Day weekend, it would still go on to gross nearly $800 million! But, judging from the simmering response, it became very clear that fans were tired of the same old-same old.

Jack Sparrow had lost the spark that made him so lovable in the first three Pirates movies, returning in a washed-up performance that felt, ultimately, unenthused.

Each film has managed to make a good chunk of cash but Disney understands that they have another great franchise on their hands if they can simply find the right pirate to helm a much-needed reboot. And it appears that Disney has found their lead.

Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie will play the lead in an all-new Pirates of the Caribbean reboot that will feature brand new stories and brand new characters. It will be written by Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson who will bring to life a new story helmed by a woman who should command the screen simply with her infectious smile.

Margot Robbie has shown that she can play an interesting female character who is all for kicking butt and girl power. I think it’s a great idea for her to fill in the shoes that Johnny Depp has left behind with Jack Sparrow and I believe she would make an excellent lead in a riveting Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.

A Movie Ranking: Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley is a distinct actress who I happen to know thanks to her role as Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. I would love for her to one day maybe play a villainess in a Marvel movie or to return to the Star Wars franchise as a cool new character. But whatever the case, for this week’s A Movie Ranking I thought it would be fun to highlight her. Enjoy!

5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales

Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush, Kaya Scodelario, and Brenton Thwaites in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

This movie is terrible. I tried to watch it for a third time sometime last year and I couldn’t make it an hour into the film. Keira Knightley plays a cameo role in the film at the movie’s end in a touching reunion between her and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and while that was nice it’s a shame this film couldn’t be better.
