Palpatine Returns! Was it a Good Thing?

The Rise of Skywalker would bode the end of the Skywalker Saga. Meaning, J.J Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio had to find a way to tie in all of the previous eight films into one film. One such character that could’ve easily brought the three trilogies together was indeed Palpatine/Darth Sidious who was believed to be dead in Return of the Jedi. But after hearing his infamous cackle at the end of the teaser trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, it seemed clear that Abrams had something fantastic up his sleeve. Unfortunately, that would not be the case.

My Experience with ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

I’ve been home several hours after seeing The Rise of Skywalker and I’ve got a lot of feelings. I mean, a LOT! And none of them are good. I wish I could say I am literally bouncing around with happiness but I am not.

The Rise of Skywalker is the blandest Star Wars movie I’ve ever seen. You’re probably saying to yourself a bland Star Wars movie? There’s nothing remotely bland about Star Wars right? There are lightsabers and spaceships, cool characters and planets, and the Force for crying out loud, but I have come away from The Rise of Skywalker feeling practically nothing.

Yes, there were laughs, yes, there was action, and yes there were Star Wars references galore but at the end of the day, this movie felt created with little goals involved other than Disney parting themselves from the Skywalker Saga…for now.

Honestly, The Rise of Skywalker doesn’t even feel like an ending. It feels like a beginning to hopefully something greater. Kathleen Kennedy has said she will announce a new Star Wars movie next year. How do we know this new movie somehow doesn’t connect to this story?

I feel that in a decade’s time, another filmmaker will arrive to continue this story because it has been left with such abandon. J.J Abrams created something special with The Force Awakens. That spark of Star Wars brilliance has, unfortunately, devolved into a depressing wish of what could’ve been. And yeah, The Last Jedi had its faults, but it far exceeds the imagination of which The Rise of Skywalker was so sorely lacking.

But this is just my opinion. There are a bunch of Star Wars fans who actually enjoyed the film…if you’re a fan of cliché. I’ll leave my spoiler-free experience at that.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a tremendous day. May the Force be with you.

Is ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ a Great Title or a Disappointing One?

When the teaser for the movie ended and we got to see the title for Episode IX for the first time it was unlike anything I could’ve expected. The Rise of Skywalker would end up being the finished title and while I was still reeling by the teaser’s jaw-dropping conclusion the title began to slowly but surely soak in.

So, that leads me to the question of this post; is The Rise of Skywalker a good title?

Well, it has meaning, but it’s a plural title highlighting the clear fact that this title could be talking about anything. I like that element. What I don’t like is how uneasy to say it is.

For a while, I was calling it Rise of the Skywalker. Then I kept saying Rise of Skywalker. And now, I still find it a little tongue-twisting to say The Rise of Skywalker. To me, it just doesn’t sound well.

I like names that flow off the tongue. Like The Force AwakensThe Empire Strikes BackThe Phantom Menace, those are names that are just as ambiguous in meaning but sound fun to say out loud as well.

So, while the teaser was clearly better than the title (WAY BETTER) I’m sure it will be a powerful title once we know the meaning behind it.

What are your thoughts on the title? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
