Ranking the Movies I’ve Seen So Far This Year

It’s been a busy movie year. I’ve seen a bunch of movies, some that have been legitimately enjoyable while there have been a few stumbles along the way. Considering that I have seen so many movies this year I thought it best to do a ranking now of the films I’ve seen (so far.) Enjoy!

16. In the Heights

In the Heights (2021) - IMDb

If you had told me In the Heights was going to be my least favorite film of the year so far I would’ve been baffled but it is. This movie irked me on a level I can’t fully explain but there’s one major flaw; John M. Chu directed this movie like a Broadway play, not a movie!

The constant singing was out of place and took away from the enjoyment of the overall story. It was too loud, too chaotic, there were too many distractions disrupting the singing numbers, and because the movie was poorly constructed from the get-go, I didn’t like any of the characters.

When that movie ended I realized that I had seen one of the worst musicals I had ever seen and that’s unfortunate.

15. The Little Things

The Little Things' movie review, Denzel Washington thriller - Los Angeles Times

I wasn’t expecting this movie to be good but I wasn’t expecting it to be as bad as it was either. I love a good whodunnit movie but this film just didn’t cut it. And its conclusion was infuriating!

14. The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad' Isn't a Typical Superhero Movie - The Atlantic

There are people who will say this is one of the best comic book movies they’ve seen. I beg to differ. The Suicide Squad is a ridiculously violent, boring island adventure with a bunch of unlikable characters and maybe two standouts. And yeah the villain was actually intimidating…for two seconds. Then he was killed in such a ridiculous fashion that I was left just staring at the screen like, “Really.”

But I’m glad there were people who liked it.

‘The Suicide squad’ Has Left Me Baffled

I knew it. I knew since the first teaser that The Suicide Squad was going to be a bad movie and sure enough, my gut proved to be right.

James Gunn is looking like a one-hit wonder at this point because his last two movies have just not done it for me. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 could’ve easily been better than the first one but its chaotic storytelling, excessive hollering, and attempt at a heartfelt moment with Yondu even though they didn’t share much screentime together in the actual film just left me feeling deflated. And The Suicide Squad suffers because it’s boring!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Is the Perfect Comic Book Movie

I don’t watch Guardians of the Galaxy a lot but when I do it’s never a boring experience. James Gunn found the perfect balance between humor, fun action sequences, and heart, culminating into a comic book movie that is honestly one of the best of all time!

The cast for the characters was spot on. The jokes are still hilarious. The soundtrack is stellar. The vibrancy of the galaxy and the locations they visit are entrancing. And yes, this movie still manages to make me shed a tear.

Groot’s sacrifice gets to my emotions every time, especially knowing that he did in fact die and that the Groot we see in the later films is another version of the character. And don’t get me started on the “Take my hand!” part.

I watched that film last night because I plan on watching The Suicide Squad on HBO Max today and I want to see the comparisons between the two films. Will James Gunn recapture that lightning in a bottle that he somehow managed to find with Guardians of the Galaxy in The Suicide Squad? Or will it be more like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; a chaotic not-that-funny mess?

I can’t wait to share my thoughts with you all tomorrow and I hope they’re mostly positive.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.

My Thoughts on ‘The Suicide Squad’

Years ago I expressed my thoughts in my review of Suicide Squad where I pointed out that the next lame entry in the DCEU was a failed attempt at trying to recapture the magic of Guardians of the Galaxy. I even stated that James Gunn should be hired to remake the film considering that he has a knack for bringing wacky comic book superheroes (or in this case, antiheroes) to life.

Well, he was hired to create a reboot called The Suicide Squad and after two trailers my interest in this movie has plummeted severely.

There’s a lot of things wrong with this movie already but let’s start with the obvious; the jokes. James Gunn was canceled a few years back because some old tweets featuring him joking about pedophilia and rape were found.

Marvel Studios briefly fired him and then brought him back. In the time that he was fired DC Comics ran at him for the opportunity to direct The Suicide Squad.

This film, being rated R, is allowing Gunn to truly showcase his wackiness, or more nicely put in the trailer, his “horribly beautiful mind” and I’m not a fan.

The jokes are not funny and yes, a little more than a bit perverted. I mean, am I supposed to laugh at the idea of that dumb-looking Weasel thing killing 27 children? That’s horrific! Or John Cena wondering if the term Starfish is referring to a butthole? Is that supposed to make me fall back in my chair and guffaw?

Taika Waititi did the same thing in Thor: Ragnarok when he called the biggest gateway in Sakaar that Thor and co. had to travel through the “Devil’s Anus” but it was actually funny. The Suicide Squad‘s jokes are very, very cringe and that’s already a no-no.

‘The Suicide Squad’ Trailer Has Left Me Underwhelmed

James Gunn is making his own version of The Suicide Squad coming out this August and while we kind of revere him because of his work on Guardians of the Galaxy it seems that movie may have been a bit of a one-hit wonder.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 isn’t nearly as good as the first movie because it features way too much hollering and too many dumb jokes that don’t really land that well. Now, he’s just released the trailer for The Suicide Squad and it just…didn’t make me happy. Take a look.

I understand that the whole idea of the Suicide Squad is wackiness and insanity but this just feels…a bit much. The jokes weren’t funny, just crude and gross. The characters don’t look that likable, if I’m being honest. And I just wasn’t impressed. The only positive thing I have to say about the trailer is that it didn’t show too much.

I think the only thing that’s making me want to see this movie is Harley Quinn who I think is such a fun character, and maybe the Polka-Dot Man, but besides that it’s pretty meh.

What did you think about the trailer? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day.

Could We See A Trailer for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ During the Super Bowl?

We’re less than two weeks away from the Super Bowl and that’s exciting for me. Not only do we get to see Tom Brady’s history-making team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in a Super Bowl alongside the up-and-coming new dynasty called the Kansas City Chiefs led by the super impressive Patrick Mahomes but we’re also getting a new swath of Super Bowl commercials.

Super Bowl commercials are some of my favorite things to see all year and among Super Bowl commercials are exciting new trailers of highly-anticipated movies. Now, of course, this year is a bit different than the average year.
