‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ After a Second Viewing

Well, I watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings again today and honestly, I can definitively say this is the best MCU origin story by a mile and one of the top ten MCU films.

Like I said in my last post, Shang-Chi isn’t a perfect movie. In the humor department some of the jokes feel a bit cheesy or poorly placed in between the awesome action scenes but that’s the only element of the film that takes some points away from the film. The rest of the movie is absolutely fantastic!

Considering that the movie has been out for a week I’m going to head into spoiler territory so I implore you to STOP READING NOW if you haven’t seen it already. Okay, here goes my review.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

I Watched Two More Movie Classics: ‘Cool Hand Luke’ and ‘In the Mood For Love’

I love watching classic movies. There’s something fascinating about looking back through time and discovering a surprise gem with a profoundly compelling story unlike anything that’s made these days.

Movies these days have become so generic. Everything’s a sequel or a reboot and if it is something new it’s an unoriginal mashup of past great movies. Hence the reason why Parasite’s arrival a couple of years ago was such a breath of fresh air. Parasite was as original as they come and guess what? It was really good too. Even this year’s Best Picture, Nomadland, was surprisingly original.

So, last night, I watched two classics: Cool Hand Luke and In the Mood for Love. So, with no further delay, here are my thoughts about these two movies.

Cool Hand Luke

Paul Newman is one of the most famous actors of all time and his most influential film just might be Cool Hand Luke. I honestly didn’t know what to expect but as I watched the film it became more and more clear that this movie was going to subvert every one of my expectations.

Was the movie great? I personally didn’t think so. At times it was hilarious and riveting…and then there were other times when the movie was as exacerbating as they come. When the movie concluded I was left staring straight ahead like, “What just happened?”

Yes, I know the movie is famous and I understand why but this wasn’t exactly my cup of tea.

4/5 stars

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Isn’t Perfect But It Did Its Thing

Well, I’m back from watching Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and well, I’ve got thoughts. Some good, some bad, but overall, Marvel Studios has another hit on their hands.

I’m going to break this review down into sections because I have so much to say so…let’s do this.

The Story

Shang Chi Set to Break Box Office Labor Day Weekend Record

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has a really good story, even if it didn’t quite know how to cohesively tell it without veering sometimes dangerously close to cornball-ville or boring predictabilty.

Tony Leung brings the heart to this movie in a way that I wasn’t expecting. I don’t think this film would have been as good as it was if it wasn’t for casting him as the story’s antagonist.

The story is very family-driven and leans heavily into the emotional side of things, hence the tears I ended up shedding during the film’s final act. While Simu Liu is a welcome addition to the MCU, Leung’s Wenwu was the character I empathized with the most.

The First Poster for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Is Here

Shang-Chi‘s marketing is ramping up and now we’ve got our first official poster. Unfortunately, the poster’s got some mixed reactions among the fandom and for good reason.

Image

This poster pretty much looks like a plain photoshop job which is very disappointing, to be honest. I like the idea of The Mandarin looming over his son, Shang-Chi, in the poster but their smaller selves at the bottom of the poster just looks offputting. It’s messing up the flow of the poster and the dark, muted colors aren’t helping matters.

There have been some great posters for Marvel Studios’ recent work but this ain’t it. I hope the character posters and later posters are better than this.

I thank you for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day.
