Rocket is actually a pretty cool character if you really think about it. I mean, he’s a talking, gun toting raccoon and yet he’s not corny or extremely weird. How is that possible? You see, that’s how awesome of a character he is. His blaring personality makes us see him as basically a human being…in raccoon form. I remember when I saw Rocket for the first time. I was definitely a little baffled by this raccoon Marvel character with his tree counterpart but the strangeness of that combination was what made Guardians of the Galaxy such a fascinatingly different superhero movie. Guardians of the Galaxy could’ve easily been a flop but James Gunn brought this weird bunch of space guardians to life in an impeccable way that I wouldn’t change in the slightest. Rocket is part of that equation that made the movie so enjoyable in the first place and so today I am beyond excited to share with you his evolution heading towards Avengers: Infinity War which is coming out in ELEVEN DAYS!!!!! Oh my gosh, I’m SOOOO EXCITED! Okay, I’m getting a little off topic here. Enjoy the post. 🙂
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Since the first time you see Rocket in the movie he’s immediately likable because of his sarcastic, kind of mean attitude that’s just hilarious to see coming from this raccoon fella. His personality roared into life on the big screen and he was just fun to watch. His evolution throughout the film isn’t at the forefront of the story but when you really look at the movie it’s kind of incredible how much of a good guy he actually becomes by the end sequence of the film.
You see, at the beginning of the movie he was basically a bounty hunter searching for douchebags across the galaxy who were going to get him a quick dose of money. That’s how he came across Peter Quill. Peter was wanted, Rocket was ready to collect his bounty, but in a scuffle he got himself captured and placed in a prison along with, well, the eventual Guardians of the Galaxy. At this point in the movie he’s still in the bounty hunter mentality as he concocts a plan to break out of the prison and practically salivates over the fact that if he and his newfound friends sell that strange orb they will be four billion units richer.
He doesn’t really change from being the grumpy raccoon he pretends to be until after he finds out the orb is an Infinity Stone and what it could do to the people of Xandar. When Peter and Gamora get captured by the Ravagers outside of Knowhere he doesn’t hightail it out of there and leave everyone to their own devices. No. His first thought was to go back to Xandar (to the people who imprisoned him!) to warn them about what was coming. That sounds like a much different Rocket than the Rocket who we meet at the beginning of the movie.
In the final sequence of the movie Rocket is a whole new dude. Yes, he will still steal from you before you can blink if he thinks you might have something valuable that he wants but he was also now a hero as well. Rocket was willing to put his life on the line to save the people of Xandar because, in his words, “he didn’t have that long of a lifespan anyway” so why not go save the galaxy? Rocket went from being a galactic criminal who didn’t really care about anything except for money to a galactic hero who actually had a much kinder heart than he wanted to admit even to himself. Rocket is awesome and I can’t wait to see some more of his unbridled heroism return in Infinity War.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Now in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel I didn’t like Rocket as much. His meaner side was elevated to, I think, the detriment of his awesomeness which I guess was the point. James Gunn wanted to confront him with this personal obstacle as he was starting to feel real companionship with his friends but used derivative actions to remain distanced because he couldn’t exactly handle the fact that he was starting to think of his friends as family. Yondu, however, was the angel on Rocket’s shoulder to let him know that it’s okay to give in to being nice. Rocket didn’t have to push away his friends in the fear that he might get abandoned or something like that. By the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 he’s back to being his heroic self and after the loss of Yondu I’m certain the next time we see him that nastier side of his character will most likely be eradicated.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Now when Rocket returns he’ll have to face, with his friends, his biggest challenge yet and I’m beyond excited to see his interactions with the other Avengers. I know for a fact it’s going to be hilarious.
